Sonny is a 7 month old Shiba Inu. She came to us late one Tuesday after her orginal owner decided to give her away. The new owner didn't want her so they brought her to us. Not so unusual you might say , this happens often in the sheltering world. What made us so sad was that Sonny was bought from a Pet Store "as is". Which meant that she had a defect of some sort. We found out exactly what this " as is" puppy had. Her medical condition is called Cerebellar Hypoplasia. It is in simple terms an under developed cerebellum and it is congenital. Which means that she has head bobbing, tremors and a stiff gait, and she may at times fall over. As the days came and went we saw that she had such a great zest for life and lives each moment to the fullest. She is a happy girl who can play with her toys and enjoys interacting with you. When she is having some of her imbalance problems and her tremors start she lays down quietly and waits for them to pass. Then she is back to her spunky self. There is nothing that can be done medically for her , her prognosis is very good and she can lead a normal life with some restrictions. We have also started her on some physical therapy exercises to help her. She is house broken and barks to let you know she needs to go. She is an inspiration to all of us.
